What's Required to Study Engineering in College?

Updated: Sep 26, 2020

What is required to study engineering in college? To start off, there are some basic requirements that everyone should complete to get into an engineering college. These include: four years of English, four years of math (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus), biology, chemistry, physics, and two years of social sciences need to be completed. Of course, this varies slightly between different schools, so it is good advice to check with your prospective college beforehand.

Some extracurricular activities in particular help to get admitted to engineering colleges. Joining STEM clubs at school and learning engineering-related skills in a student’s free time can be very beneficial. Getting engineering related internships and/or competing in engineering events can be very helpful as well.

Requirements vary slightly based on what type of engineering a student is pursuing a degree in, though there are some basic requirements. Engineering students in college must have some foundations in math, science, and engineering. In math, students must be able to have a solid foundation in the calculus of continuous functions, linear algebra, differential equations, an introduction to discrete mathematics, and an understanding of statistics and probability theory. Students can take courses in mathematics. In science, students must have a strong background in biology, chemistry, and physics. Most students include physics and/or chemistry courses. For engineering, students must take an introductory engineering course in college as well as have a working understanding of technology in society.

With that being said, activities and classes taken in high school should not be done just for college. Make sure that you enjoy what you're doing!
